My first bible stories11/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Starting around the 7th century B.C., different groups, or schools, of authors wrote them down at different times, before they were at some point ( probably during the first century B.C.) combined into the single, multi-layered work we know today. To explain the Bible’s contradictions, repetitions and general idiosyncrasies, most scholars today agree that the stories and laws it contains were communicated orally, through prose and poetry, over centuries. Those first five books were filled with contradictory, repetitive material, and often seemed to tell different versions of the Israelites’ story even within a single section of text.Īs Baden explains, the “classic example” of this confusion is the story of Noah and the flood (Genesis 6:9). “But they're already asking the question-was it possible or not possible for to have written them?”īy the time the Enlightenment began in the 17th century, most religious scholars were more seriously questioning the idea of Moses’ authorship, as well as the idea that the Bible could possibly have been the work of any single author. “That's one opinion among many,” says Joel Baden, a professor at Yale Divinity School and author of The Composition of the Pentateuch: Renewing the Documentary Hypothesis. READ MORE: Inside the Conversion Tactics of the Early Christian Church A volume of the Talmud, the collection of Jewish laws recorded between the 3rd and 5th centuries A.D., dealt with this inconsistency by explaining that Joshua (Moses’ successor as leader of the Israelites) likely wrote the verses about Moses’ death. Yet nearly from the beginning, readers of the Bible observed that there were things in the so-called Five Books of Moses that Moses himself could not possibly have witnessed: His own death, for example, occurs near the end of Deuteronomy. That single author was believed to be Moses, the Hebrew prophet who led the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt and guided them across the Red Sea toward the Promised Land. For at least 1,000 years, both Jewish and Christian tradition held that a single author wrote the first five books of the Bible-Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy-which together are known as the Torah (Hebrew for “instruction”) and the Pentateuch (Greek for “five scrolls”). The Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible, narrates the history of the people of Israel over about a millennium, beginning with God’s creation of the world and humankind, and contains the stories, laws and moral lessons that form the basis of religious life for both Jews and Christians. Hip hop music was only performed live at first, but in 1979 a hip hop single called Rapper's Delight by The Sugarhill Gang was released, and to everyone's surprise it became a top-ten hit worldwide.Īfter the success of Rapper's Delight, many other hip hop records were released like Kurtis Blow's The Breaks and Afrika Bambaataa's Planet Rock. Some MCs tried to be more entertaining by talking in time to the beat of the music and using rhymes, and by doing this they invented rapping. The MC would introduce the DJ and encourage everyone to dance and have a good time. Sometimes they'd also deejay at free block parties in their neighbourhoods where they'd play funk and disco tracks non-stop and ask a friend to act as their MC. Many of these young people were unemployed, but some found work as DJs in discos where they learned deejaying techniques like how to use two turntables and a DJ mixer to play records non-stop. That said, it can be argued that the beatniks - the followers of the beat lifestyle - may have done it with more aplomb than the hippies.§15-2-2. The beatniks were the predecessors of the "turn on and tune out" hippies of the 1960s.Much of their writing supported the beatnik movement, embracing drugs, alcohol and greater freedom. Three writers were the most famed from this generation: Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S.They had no place to go, and nothing from which to draw hope. The generation was sick of World War II and stunned by the sudden entry into the atomic age by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The Beat generation harkens back to the late 1940s.It wouldn’t have survived all this time if it wasn’t. Indeed, the beatnik generation slang was pretty hip. Those films were surprising in their content, and caught viewers off guard so it’s a real shame that this one is not original: the structure of its plot is almost the same as that of You’re Next (which had a significantly better pay-off too). His name may be familiar as the writer of some notable films, such as Blair Witch, The Guest and – a favourite of mine – You’re Next, though this is the first feature film he has directed. Cinematographer Karim Hussain is precise and effective, though not as striking as his work I’d admired in a couple of favourites from recent years, Possessor and Parallel. The production of Seance is lovely, making good use of the expansive building (though I would have liked to have seen some secret passages) and its grounds. The head of the academy, Mrs Landry (Marina Stephenson-Kerr, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil), has a little more nuance to portray, walking an uneasy line between discipline and sympathy. The new girl is Camille (Suki Waterhouse, who couldn’t have been more different to her role in The Bad Batch) and the high-school clique she joins includes Bethany (Madisen Beaty, Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood), Alice (Inanna Sarkis, After We Collided), with Helina (Ella-Rae Smith, Into the Badlands) who acts as Camille’s buddy into the established school year. Working one at a time, place cutlets in bowl and toss to coat in flour. Slice chicken breasts in half crosswise into 4 cutlets and lightly pound each piece between sheets of plastic wrap until an even thickness (about ½" thick or less). Scrape up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan, then swirl in the capers and a few tablespoons of butter to create an emulsion, i.e., turn it into a rich, glossy sauce that’s as good spooned over a pile of mashed potatoes as it is soaked into the crusty chicken cutlets. In the Net Zero Scenario, demand response and battery storage combined are projected to meet around a quarter of flexibility needs globally by 2030, increasing to meet half of flexibility needs by 2050. Globally, the pace of demand response growth is far behind the 500 GW of capacity called for in 2030 in the Net Zero Scenario, under which the need for electricity system flexibility – defined as the hour‐to‐hour change in output required from dispatchable resources – more than doubles to 2030. The Net Zero Scenario has 500 GW of demand response brought onto the market by 2030, corresponding to a tenfold increase in deployment levels in 2020.
